How to Stay Healthy During a COVID Surge
During the past few years we’ve all had to adapt to a new way of life—working from home, wearing masks, isolating—all thanks to COVID-19. The unpredictability of COVID patterns make life a little unpredictable as well, and can make it difficult for us to adhere to our routines.
So what happens if we’re isolating? What happens if we’re staying indoors more to keep others safe? How can we stay healthy during a COVID surge, when we want to protect ourselves and others from getting sick?
Focus on foods that will nourish you. Big shout out to veggies here—they are packed with immune-boosting nutrients like zinc, selenium, folate, and vitamin C. Aim for 4 servings of veggies per day if you can, and eat them first at meals. Throw spinach in your omelettes, have some veggie sticks with your sandwich, snack on carrots and guac, or roast them at meals. You’ll also want to focus on getting in your fruits, whole grains, healthy fats, and lean proteins, as your body functions at its best when it receives a variety of nutrients.
Make fueling your body easy. Think about easy ways you can add more healthy foods to your diet if it’s not something you’re used to. Try prepping fruits and veggies in advance. Place your sliced produce at eye-level in the fridge so they’re accessible and easy to grab. Make a big cozy soup or chili with a bunch of veggies, and make a large batch so you can freeze the extra or have it for the week.
Go for a walk. Yes, it’s cold! But your body will thank you for getting in some movement. Bundle up and you’ll feel warm while you walk. Walks are the easiest way to increase your daily movement and will give you the opportunity to get some fresh air.
Try at-home workouts. There are tons of at-home workouts you can find on the Internet or on apps like the Peloton app. Choose a workout you enjoy, and stay consistent. Focus on strength training, as strength exercises help build muscle and bone density to keep your body strong and enhance your metabolism. Supplementing your at-home workouts with a walk is a plus!
Stay hydrated. Keep a glass of water by your bedside so you have it ready when you wake up. Try to sip throughout the day—carry a bottle with you or set reminders on your phone to drink! Our bodies function optimally when we are well hydrated. Additionally, getting sick causes our bodies to dehydrate faster, so always make sure you have your water on hand.
These times are tough, but it’s all about learning to adapt and finding ways that make you feel healthy, happy and energized! What are some of the ways you have stayed healthy this year?
